Oral nystatin suspension should be kept in contact with the oral mucosa; food may interfere with adherence.
Give after meals and keep in contact with the lesions.

Nystatin is generally well tolerated; hypersensitivity reactions are rare but possible in sensitised patients.
Stop at a hypersensitivity reaction.

Oral nystatin acts locally on the mucosa; severe gastrointestinal disease can reduce the efficacy of local contact.

Polyene antifungal with fungistatic and fungicidal effect against yeasts and yeast-like fungi: binds to sterols in the cell membrane of susceptible Candida species, altering permeability and allowing leakage of intracellular components.
Binding to fungal membrane sterols (ergosterol), altering permeability and causing cell lysis; no appreciable activity against bacteria, protozoa or viruses.
Insignificant GI absorption: most of the oral dose is eliminated unchanged in feces; significant plasma concentrations may occur in patients with renal insufficiency.
Minimal hepatic metabolism (acts locally in the GI lumen).
Not applicable orally (no significant systemic absorption).
